18/09/2007 CIAA contribution to the European Commission’s stakeholder consultation on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP)and Sustainable Industrial Policy (SIP) For the EU food and drink industries, long-term sustainability of production and consumption patterns along the food chain is a strategic priority. As an industry responsible for providing some 480 million Europeans every day with safe, high-quality, healthy, enjoyable and affordable food, the sector is working intensively to continuously improve its management of resources, energy, water and waste for the benefit of consumers, communities and the natural environment. Achieving long-term sustainability will require further continued efforts, priority setting and cooperative action. CIAA therefore welcomes the current stakeholder consultation on SCP and is committed to add value to the process. All three pillars of sustainability, including social and economic, must thereby be considered in an integrated manner. Environmental sustainability in turn covers issues beyond climate change and resource use, however crucial they may be.
